I am proud of both my silhouette and negative space photos, and I applied certain

techniques and angles to both. Since the silhouette pictures had to be taken with the sun in the

picture as the primary light source, most of them are from an upward angle with the subject

facing downward towards the camera. With the silhouette pictures I also enjoyed changing the

background coloring, which was the sky. I used orange, yellow, purple, and a light blue to add

some otherwise nonexistent color/feeling to the pictures. Only one of the pictures I took I did not

edit at all, it turned out very well (the dog hand puppet). Generally the ideas I had thought of

beforehand worked out as I had planned. I really liked the silhouette photography technique

because it manages to be both a simple and beautiful art.

I would think that although the concept behind negative space pictures is rather simple, I

had a harder time finding interesting subject/background combinations. Even after taking five

pictures I liked, one was still less of a negative space picture and more of a rule of thirds picture

but I liked it so much I kept it. I believe I like it so much because the subject (Josh) is just

standing alone on campus looking off to the side of the picture as if he was interested in

something off camera. The angles varied with how the subject was presented. I took one

downward at my shoe, two up to the sun and a passing crow, one directly at Josh, and one angled

down a table. All but one of my pictures did I adjust the brightness and contrast settings. For the

first time so far in Photo class I preferred to wash the pictures out with high brightness and low

contrast.

Both of these photographic techniques turned out to be very fun and I enjoyed using

them. So far in Photography 2, I would say that these two techniques were actually my favorite. I

was able to add my own preference to the pictures while retaining the point of both the silhouette

and negative space techniques.

As a form of art and photography, negative space is used to do many important things for the photograph. Normal pictures are taken usually with the intent to focus on the subject and it is supposed to be the center of attention. In a negative space picture or photograph the subject can still be the center of attention, but the background can be just as important and even the center of attention. Usually the subject and background are much contrasted. They are often different or opposite colors such as: black and white, red and black, etc. Both the foreground or subject and background can also be manipulated by the photographer to reveal more than one subject or a hidden image in the picture. Using this technique, a photographer can create a visually contrasting picture or real life photograph by color that also includes symmetry or asymmetrical images due to the forms and shapes of the subject(s) and background.
